Lunch & Learn: Hydraulic Loops, Accessories & Pumping Arrangements
Overview
I developed and presented a hybrid Lunch & Learn, along with a mechanical design engineer (P.Eng.), for the Engineering and Construction teams (30 people) on top of my regular internship work. The session supported ongoing professional development, introduced practical hydronic HVAC concepts, and encouraged cross-team collaboration, with people attending both in person and by call.
Topics
Hydronic system fundamentals
- Open vs. closed systems
- System pressure, fluid quality, and pumping implications
Loop design and distribution
- Supply/return loops
- Direct piping concepts
- Reverse return systems and self-balancing behavior
Hydraulic separation and pumping strategy
- Hydraulic separation principles
- Buffer tank separation method
- Pumping circuit independence and circulation behavior
Flow control and efficiency
- Variable flow vs. constant speed systems
- Minimum flow requirements
- Energy and control implications of pumping strategy
Advanced circuit behavior
- Primary / secondary / tertiary circuits
- Common pipe fundamentals
- Backflow conditions
- Bypass flow impact on cooling coil performance

Outcome
Strengthened internal technical knowledge-sharing while building my own ability to communicate mechanical design concepts clearly across multidisciplinary teams.
